United Methodist Women
Purpose:
The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of missions through participation in the global ministries of the church.
Meetings
The United Methodist Women generally meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the church at 10:00 a.m. for a program, business meeting, and fellowship lunch.
Our programs usually are from one the studies recommended by The United Methodist Women, either a Spiritual Growth Study, a study of some Social Issue or a Geographical Study.
Studies (2007-2008)
- God's Mission, God's Song which looks at historical and current roles of music in mission outreach.
- Israel and Palestine; a look at the current situation and what we as Christians can do.
Local Outreach Projects
Our Unit participates in various local outreach projects:
- Sponsor a Birthday Party in October for the residents at Falling Spring Nursing Home for those whose birthday is in October. We give one gift each, and provide cake and ice cream.
- Providing food ingredients for 2 meals this summer for the Seeds to Success Program in Gettysburg. The people will prepare the meals themselves as part of their learning to cook experience.
- Visit and deliver cookies to shut-ins at Christmas time.
- Provide supplies for Health Kits and School Kits for Mission Central.
- Provide paper products for Neighborhood Center and collect UPC labels from Campbells and other food items as well as Box Tops for Education from various food boxes.
- Make Prayer Shawls to be given to people who are going through difficult times.
- Make Easter Candy as a fund raiser for various mission projects.
Pledge to Missions
We make a Pledge to Missions and send our money to our District which goes through Channels to Women's Division in New York which is the headquarters from which money is dispersed throughout the United States and around the world to many mission projects. Our pledge for 2007 is $2000. In addition to our pledge we also send other special offerings.
We support financially, Neighborhood Center in Harrisburg, The Homeless Shelter, BOPIC, The House of Grace, WIN, SCCAP (The Seeds to Success Program in Gettysburg) and others.
Reading Program
We have a Reading Program in which we read recommended books in different categories: Spiritual Growth, Education for Mission, Social Action and Nurturing for Community. These books are sometimes entertaining, sometimes challenging and sometimes they open our eyes to conditions of people in other parts of the world whose lives are not as carefree and happy as ours.
We participate in Cluster, District, and Conference events:
- Spiritual Enrichment Meeting
- Mini-School of Mission
- Conference Schools of Mission
- District Annual Meeting
- Central Pennsylvania Conf. Annual Meeting
All women of Calvary United Methodist Church are invited to join us and share in our involvement in mission, study and ministry.
